Senior Sustainability Engineer / Carbon Manager

I’m recruiting on behalf of my client for a Senior Sustainability Engineer / Carbon Manager to join their team. In this role, you’ll play a key part in delivering sustainability and carbon management across the lifecycle of infrastructure projects, working on high-impact, complex projects while embedding sustainable practices and promoting carbon reduction.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Supporting infrastructure project teams in integrating sustainability and carbon management throughout the entire project lifecycle—from feasibility to operation.
- Delivering PAS2080 Carbon Management systems on projects and ensuring compliance with both client and industry requirements.
- Producing Whole Life Carbon Assessments in line with RICS V2, using a variety of carbon assessment tools.
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to identify and track sustainable opportunities, supporting their implementation through business cases and technical queries.
- Sharing lessons learned from successful and missed opportunities, improving the approach to sustainability on future projects.
- Delivering sustainability and carbon awareness training to project teams, empowering them to implement best practices.
- Working with engineering teams, design partners, suppliers, and contractors to embed sustainable best practices across projects.
- Investigating innovative materials and methodologies, assessing their sustainability performance and applicability to projects.
- Presenting sustainable design case studies for tenders, showcasing your client’s commitment to sustainability.
- Monitoring and reviewing project sustainable design elements to ensure delivery aligns with client expectations.
- Communicating confidently and authoritatively with clients, promoting your client’s sustainable design capabilities.
- Delivering presentations to internal teams, clients, and research partners on the latest in sustainable practice.
- Collaborating with Biodiversity, Natural Capital, Social Value, SHE & Carbon experts to ensure their consideration on all projects.
- Remaining at the forefront of sustainable practices by supporting research groups, industry networks, and academia.
What We’re Looking For:
- ✔ Degree qualified in a relevant field with Chartered status (ICE, IStructE, IEMA, or equivalent).
- ✔ Proven experience delivering PAS2080 Carbon Management on infrastructure projects.
- ✔ Strong experience in creating Whole-life Carbon Assessments using the RICS V2 methodology.
- ✔ Experience with Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and selecting the appropriate carbon factors.
- ✔ A good understanding of how commercial frameworks can be used to implement sustainability initiatives.
- ✔ Experience working on complex multidisciplinary engineering projects, including civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and process safety disciplines.
- ✔ Knowledge of the full project lifecycle, with experience supporting multiple stages (feasibility, design, construction, and operation).
- ✔ Strong communication skills, with the ability to present to senior business leaders, both internally and externally.
- ✔ Awareness of broader sustainability topics, including innovation, Biodiversity, Natural Capital, and BREEAM/CEEQUAL certification.
- ✔ UK project experience with working knowledge of current UK regulations and legislation.
- ✔ Strong investigative research skills and a keen interest in sustainable practices.
- ✔ A driven individual, keen to progress and enhance your skills through continuous learning and new work areas.
- ✔ A curious and courageous advocate for sustainability, willing to challenge industry norms and promote change.
- ✔ Able to demonstrate social responsibility awareness in the context of ethics, community, and the environment.
